A good shirt wardrobe isn't about volume. It's about covering every situation you actually face, with shirts you're happy to put on. For most professionals, between eight and twelve shirts is plenty — enough to rotate through a work week without repeating and to let each shirt rest between wears.

The core five

  • Two white shirts: one in poplin for formal days, one in twill or herringbone for texture
  • Two light blue shirts: one plain, one with a subtle texture or fine stripe
  • One pale grey or ecru shirt for variety under a navy or charcoal suit

Add personality

Once the core is covered, add two or three shirts with character: a fine pinstripe, a micro-check or a muted pink. Keep patterns small and colours soft so they combine easily with your ties and jackets.

Add the occasion shirts

  • One French-cuff shirt in white for weddings and evening events
  • One oxford button-down for smart-casual days
  • One linen or linen-blend shirt for hot weekends

Fit first, then count

If you're choosing between buying more shirts and buying better ones, choose better. A smaller wardrobe in properly fitted, quality cloth will always look sharper than a large one in shirts that nearly fit.

The goal isn't a full wardrobe. It's a wardrobe where every shirt earns its place.
