What Shirt to Wear to a Wedding: A Guide for Guests and Grooms

The shirt does more of the work than the suit at a wedding, especially in photos and in the heat.

Weddings are long days with photographs, handshakes, hugs and often a lot of standing around. The shirt you choose has to look crisp at the ceremony and still hold up on the dance floor.

For the groom

A crisp white shirt in fine cotton is the timeless choice. Choose a spread or classic collar that frames your tie or bow tie well, and consider French cuffs if you're wearing cufflinks. Fit matters more than usual: you'll be photographed from every angle, so get a fitting well ahead of the day.

For guests

  • Day weddings: white or light blue, in a breathable cotton or cotton-linen blend
  • Evening weddings: crisp white with a more formal collar, and French cuffs if you own cufflinks
  • Informal weddings: a soft pastel or fine check in an easy collar

Fabric and comfort

Choose a lighter cloth if the event is outdoors or in warm weather. A shirt that breathes will stay fresher through hours of standing, eating and dancing. Pack a spare if you can, and keep collar stays in.

Avoid these

  • Very shiny fabrics that photograph harshly
  • Bold patterns that compete with the couple
  • Brand-new shirts you haven't worn or checked for fit
  • White shirts for guests at weddings where the dress code asks for colour
Wear a shirt you've already tested for an hour of sitting and standing. A wedding is not the day to find out it pulls at the buttons.
